Custer - I-5 southbound

Temporarily closed:

Until further notice, the northbound and southbound Custer Rest Area along Interstate 5 is closed to all travelers.  This temporary closure provides an opportunity to reallocate current operational funds to make necessary repairs, safety improvements and preventative maintenance work.

Why the closure

A new survey shows there is a significant decrease in traffic volumes and usage of this rest area due to recent travel restrictions. This temporary closure:

  • Allows maintenance crews to make safety enhancements and much needed improvements.
  • Provides an opportunity for maintenance staff to invest their time, funds and efforts where they are needed most.
  • Maximizes critical improvements at a time when travel numbers are significantly lower than previous years.
  • Improves the traveling experience by creating a more aesthetically-pleasing, safe rest area.

Alternative options
Several other rest areas exist along the I-5 corridor, including Bow Hill, Smokey Point and Silver Lake. For those in the freight community, there are multiple options for truck stops within a reasonable distance of this closure. These include Slater Road, Pilot at Main Street and several area gas stations.

Project updates will be posted on the @wsdot_north Twitter feed, WSDOT traffic alerts page, Facebook page and mobile app.
