The I-5 Express Lanes help traffic flow during busy travel times. These lanes move in the direction that will relieve the most congestion and are on a typical daily schedule that changes on weekends and occasionally for major events.
I-5 Express Lanes schedule
Monday-Friday
- Southbound - 5 a.m. to 11 a.m.
- Northbound - 11:15 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Closed: 11 p.m. - 5 a.m.
Saturday & Sunday
- Southbound - 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Northbound - 1:45 p.m. to 11 p.m.
- Closed: 11 p.m. - 8 a.m.
Special events schedule
Express lanes closing early Dec. 9, Dec. 11, Dec. 15 and Dec. 17
The I-5 Express Lanes will close early at 9 p.m. on the above mentioned dates to facilitate construction happening in the lanes. They will resume their normal schedules each of the following mornings.
Express lanes on weekend schedule for Christmas Day holiday, Dec. 25
The I-5 Express Lanes will operate on a weekend schedule on Thursday, Dec. 25 for the Christmas Day holiday. They will resume their normal schedule the following morning.

Slow down on ice and snow.
It's easier to skid or lose control traveling at higher speeds. Give yourself more time to stop.
Carry chains, practice installing them.
Winter conditions could mean chains are required on your route. Practice putting them on your vehicle ahead of time.
Pack your winter car kit.
Carry extra supplies like warm clothing, ice scraper and brush, jumper cables and other emergency items.
