Route & commercial vehicle restrictions

Restrictions and requirements for oversize and overweight commercial vehicles operating on Washington state roadways. Commercial vehicle drivers are responsible for verifying route restrictions, overhead height clearances, and other requirements.

All vehicles over 10,000 pounds GVW shall carry a minimum of 2 extra chains for use in the event that road conditions require the use of more chains or that chains in use are broken or otherwise made useless, WAC 204-24-050 (2) (f).

Days when travel is restricted: Vehicles operating under special permit for overweight/over dimensional, except as provided for in Washington Administrative Code (WAC 468-38-075), may be restricted from the state highways on the holidays.

Slow down on ice and snow.

It's easier to skid or lose control traveling at higher speeds. Give yourself more time to stop.

Carry chains, practice installing them.

Winter conditions could mean chains are required on your route. Practice putting them on your vehicle ahead of time.

Pack your winter car kit.

Carry extra supplies like warm clothing, ice scraper and brush, jumper cables and other emergency items.
