During summer 2023, our contractor crews replaced the damaged girder on the 24th Avenue South bridge over SR 518 near the Sea-Tac International Airport. Crews also made bridge drain and drainpipe improvements in the area.

A girder on the 24th Avenue South bridge over State Route 518 in SeaTac was replaced after it was struck by an over-height vehicle.

History and background

In 2020, the 24th Street bridge over State Route 518 (milepost 1.44 to 1.46) was struck by an over-height vehicle, causing severe damage to one of the girders over the eastbound lanes. The girder was moved more than a half inch to the east and suffered a crack.

The girder had to be replaced, which required the closure of SR 518 to demolish the old girder and place a new one.

The bridge serves as an artery to and from Sea-Tac International Airport for airport-related businesses located north of SR 518 and for a large Port of Seattle employee parking lot.
