The SR 26 corridor is a rural farm-to-market route and is also heavily utilized by Washington State University students, who travel between the campus in Pullman and Western Washington. Currently, there are no existing climbing (passing) lanes for drivers to use. The addition of truck climbing lanes would address the platooning of vehicles behind slow-moving trucks. There are three climbing lanes proposed with this project - one westbound and two eastbound between the town of Dusty and Colfax.
Project was awarded to Shamrock Paving, with construction beginning in June 2022. Completion of the first three passing lanes was completed in fall 2023. Construction of the fourth passing lane will begin in 2024.
