I-5/Yesler Way to Northgate Vic - Pavement, Deck, Joints and Drainage

We originally planned to begin major preservation work on Interstate 5 on the Ship Canal Bridge (just north of downtown Seattle) in March 2025. The long-term lane closures and critical preservation work on the I-5 Ship Canal Bridge is now expected to begin in 2026. For more information about this recent announcement, read our recent blog post: The One Where We Revive I-5 (just a little later than planned).

Project overview

Long-term lane closures for preservation work on the I-5 Ship Canal Bridge have been postponed until 2026.

WSDOT is actively working with contractor, Guy F. Atkinson Construction to adjust the schedule and scope of this project and will provide additional details as they become available.

The decision to adjust the scope, schedule and timing of the long-term lane closures comes as WSDOT works to align construction spending with available budget.

What to expect

Although months-long lane closures have been postponed until 2026, travelers can still expect overnight work and major weekend traffic disruptions in 2025.

All lanes of I-5 in Seattle will be open during the 2026 World Cup matches in Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. to keep travelers and goods moving during this major event.

We will rehabilitate both directions of the I-5 Ship Canal Bridge.
