Project overview
We improved mobility on I-5 through Seattle by moving barrier on a 1,500-foot section and creating three through lanes near Seneca Street, adding ramp meters for the Dearborn/I-90 and Cherry Street on-ramps and extending the Active Traffic and Demand Management system north to SR 520.
What to expect
This project is complete.
Work between Yesler Way and SR 520 added a short section of a third lane between Seneca Street and the Washington State Convention Center, ramp meters at the Dearborn/I-90 and Cherry Street on-ramps and extend the Active Traffic and Demand Management system.
Improving traffic on northbound I-5
When I-5 was built in the mid-1960s, an exit-only lane at Seneca Street and two through lanes were sufficient. That is no longer the case. This project:
- Moved barrier to create room and uses some of the right shoulder to create space on the freeway for a third through lane north of Seneca Street .
- Added ramp meters at the Dearborn/I-90 and Cherry Street on-ramps to improve safety by spacing out vehicles that are merging.
- Extended the Active Traffic and Demand Management system, a series of overhead signs that improves safety by notifying drivers of lane closures.
