Airport Aid Grant Awards (2015-2017 Biennium)

2015 - WSDOT awards $1.9 million in state funds to 45 airports during first round of 2015-2017 grants

OLYMPIA - Forty-five Washington airports will receive $1,957,692.49 in state funds during the first round of Airport Aid Program grants for the 2015-2017 biennium. These funds will cover 60 airport projects across the state in the areas of pavement, safety, planning, and property acquisition.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Aviation also used $1,279,326.31 in state funds to leverage more than $35 million in federal grants for Washington airports.

Funding breakdown:

  • Federal - $35,315,349.35
  • State - $1,957,692.49
  • Local - $3,309,777.15
  • Total - $40,587,318.08

Over eighty-six percent ($35 million) of the $40.5 million in federal, state and local aid investment dollars is slated for projects that preserve and improve critical airport pavement. Seventeen planning, property acquisition, and maintenance projects account for another ten percent ($4.1 million) of the combined grant dollars, while thirteen safety projects account for the remaining three percent ($1.4 million).

Projects awarded:

  • 29 pavement - $1,305,443.64
  • 13 safety - $269,708.68
  • 17 planning - $346,202.17
  • 1 property acquisition - $36,338.00

Exact grant amounts are subject to change according to final project bid totals and construction quantities.

Fifty-nine airports applied for more than $2.8 million in grants for this round. WSDOT's grant program is funded through an 11-cent-per gallon fee on aviation fuel, along with aircraft registration fees.

WSDOT anticipates soliciting applications for the second round of 2015-2017 biennium grants in February 2016. Award notifications for that round of grants is targeted for the week of May 16, 2016.

Slow down on ice and snow.

It's easier to skid or lose control traveling at higher speeds. Give yourself more time to stop.

Carry chains, practice installing them.

Winter conditions could mean chains are required on your route. Practice putting them on your vehicle ahead of time.

Pack your winter car kit.

Carry extra supplies like warm clothing, ice scraper and brush, jumper cables and other emergency items.
