In summer 2021, our contractors will begin a project in the I-405 corridor that will strengthen several overpasses to help them withstand a major earthquake. These include structures that carry I-405 over:

SR 513 - Montlake Bridge - Mechanical Rehab, Deck Replacement & Joint Repair

Project news

  • Aug. 9 to Sept. 3: The Montlake Bridge will close to vehicle traffic 24/7. The bridge sidewalks will remain open. In the fall, the bridge will close on weekends to all traffic, including pedestrians and bicyclists, for up to five weekends.

SR 509 Completion Project reaches a major milestone with $264 million apparent best value proposal

The apparent best value contractor is selected for the next stage of construction for the SR 509 Completion Project. which is part of the Puget Sound Gateway Program. The work takes place from Kent to SeaTac and builds the first mile of a new SR 509 Expressway. Guy F. Atkinson Construction is the apparent best value winner.

Check schedules if you must ride a state ferry over Thanksgiving weekend

SEATTLE – People catching a state ferry for essential travel over Thanksgiving weekend should review sailing schedules in advance. Several routes are operating on modified timetables under Washington State Ferries’ COVID-19 Response Service Plan that are different from years past.

Extended, full closure of SR 203 near Carnation for repairs begins Tuesday, Dec. 1

Travelers need to prepare for a lengthy closure of State Route 203 south of Stillwater Hill Road beginning Tuesday, Dec. 1. A signed detour is expected to be in place until mid-January as contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation install drainage under this section highway and as well as on the hillside above.

Chinook and Cayuse passes closed for the season due to heavy snow

The gates to State Routes 410 and 123 inside Mount Rainier National Park, including Chinook and Cayuse passes, are closed for the season after heavy snow and a forecast of more to come.

SR 530 reopens to two-way traffic east of Arlington

Three months of alternating traffic has come to an end on State Route 530. At about 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, the highway reopened to two-way traffic.

  • This project is currently in the initial design phase. The scheduled advertisement date for this project is 11/1/2021. 

Needs and Benefits

This connectivity project will improve the pedestrian access route on State Route 525 in Clinton from the Park & Ride at Deer Lake Road (milepost 8.96) to the Washington State Ferries - Clinton Ferry Terminal (milepost 8.51).

Hillside erosion, not snowfall, to close SR 542 to Artist Point earlier than usual on Oct. 12

Beginning Monday, Oct. 12, State Route 542/Mount Baker Highway to Artist Point is closing for the season. This early closure is due to a crumbling wall and the potential safety hazard to travelers and the ski runs below.
