Restoration work on Deception Pass and Canoe Pass bridges resumes with new contractor

OAK HARBOR – A new contractor will begin the final phase of critical preservation work on two of Washington’s historic bridges on Monday, Feb. 8. The Washington State Department of Transportation signed a completion agreement with Cekra, Inc. from Wilmington, N.C. to resume sandblasting and painting on the State Route 20 Canoe Pass and Deception Pass bridges.

SR 522 - Paradise Lake Rd to Snohomish River Br - Interchange & Widening

  • WSDOT has selected a preliminary preferred alternative for the SR 522/Paradise Lake Road interchange improvements.
  • WSDOT received $12.8 million in state funds in the 2019-2021 biennium. $10 million in Connecting Washington funding will now be available in 2021-2023. These funds will be used for design and right-of-way acquisition.
  • There is no construction funding to complete the interchange and widening improvement projects on SR 522. The total cost of all improvements is estimated at $180 million.

Weekend SR 520 closures planned for new highway lid work

Weekend travelers should plan ahead as crews alternately close one direction of State Route 520 across Lake Washington over four weekends this winter. Beginning Friday night, Jan. 29, crews will close the eastbound lanes and start placing beams over the highway to build a community-connecting lid in Seattle’s Montlake neighborhood.

State Route 203 between Duvall and Carnation opens to traffic ahead of schedule, Friday, Jan. 22

After months of being closed, all lanes of State Route 203 between Northeast Stillwater Hill Road and Northeast 88th Street will reopen by 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22. This comes nearly a year after a slow-moving landslide damaged a portion of the highway and caused part of the roadway to sink.

Ferry ridership at lowest level in nearly 50 years

SEATTLE – Annual ridership aboard Washington State Ferries plunged by nearly 10 million customers in 2020 – a drop of 41% from the previous year – to roughly 14 million. Stay-at-home orders, remote work and decreased tourism because of COVID-19 are the main reasons for the system’s lowest yearly count since 1975.

Highway barriers to be built on US 2 in Snohomish

Starting Monday, Jan. 4, a concrete barrier will be installed in the newly constructed six-foot wide median of US 2 between Bickford Avenue and just east of the State Route 9 interchange in Snohomish. The barriers will greatly reduce the risk of head-on and crossover collisions.

One lane of State Route 203 between Northeast Stillwater Hill Road and Northeast 88th Street will temporarily reopen from noon Saturday, Dec. 19 to noon Monday, Jan. 4, to provide an alternative route for travelers ahead of forecasted flooding of the Snoqualmie River this weekend.

SR 203 repair effort near Carnation hits milestone

On Saturday, Dec. 12 contractor crews finished installing four drainage systems under SR 203 and an additional four in the hillside above between Stillwater Hill Road and Northeast 88th Street. This week, they will be demolishing and removing the rubble of the old highway, compacting the road base and applying new asphalt on top.
