Nearly 18,000 vehicles use the intersection of SR 9 and Bickford Ave. to travel to and from the city of Snohomish and Snohomish County each day.
From 2011 to 2015, there were 31 collisions at this intersection with half of those resulting in injury including three fatal/serious injury collisions.
The purpose of this project was to reduce the risk of collisions at this intersection. Before the project, this intersection has left and right turn pockets on the highway and only right turns permitted from the side streets. Constructing a roundabout increased safety and mobility in the area for both drivers and pedestrians.
Studies have shown roundabouts can reduce collisions by at least 50 percent.
With planned development to the north of this location, adding a roundabout to this area helps relieve growing congestion.

The project was funded primarily with the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) which allows states, and the local governments within them, target safety funds to their most critical safety needs. The goal of the HSIP is to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes, following Washington state’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan (Target Zero)
For travelers heading southbound on SR 9 toward 30th St: From 30th Street take Bickford Avenue and continue to Avenue D then to 2nd Street to access southbound SR 9.
For travelers heading northbound on SR 9 toward 2nd Street: Take Marsh Road to Airport Way and continue to Avenue D to Bickford Avenue then to 30th Street to access northbound SR 9.
Through-traffic will take US 2 to get around the closure.
