Project overview

This project replaced rapid flashing beacons with overhead pedestrian signals at 11 locations along State Route 7 in the Pierce County communities of Parkland and Spanaway. What to expect

New overhead traffic lights for people who walk and roll are now active at 11 intersections along SR 7 in Parkland and Spanaway.

The new traffic lights are mounted on a mast arm and pole. When not in use, the lights remain green for drivers. When the button is pushed, the lights cycle to red to stop vehicle traffic and allow people walking or rolling to cross the highway.

People will notice changes to the sidewalks and median islands. Left turns from any direction are no longer accessible at most of the intersections. At Violet Meadow Street South, southbound travelers can still turn left.

Travelers can expect occasional daytime single-lane closures as crews work to complete the project.

Temporary bus stop changes

When the right lane is closed, people may need to use the next closest Pierce Transit bus stop during these hours. Bus riders are encouraged to check the Pierce Transit website for any changes in advance.

Bicycle and pedestrian detours will be available.

This project made pedestrian improvements at 11 highway crossings along State Route 7 from Violet Meadow Street South in Parkland to 188th Street South in Spanaway.

In May 2022, WSDOT applied for a grant through the Pedestrian & Bicyclist program to enhance the crossings along the SR 7 corridor in Parkland and Spanaway. The grant was awarded to WSDOT in early 2023 to provide funding for this project. The Washington Legislature provided the remainder of the funding needed to design and construct the overhead pedestrian signals and other enhancements during the 2023 legislative session.
