Project overview
In summer 2022 and 2023, WSDOT's contractor, Granite Construction, replaced roughly 100 concrete panels along both directions of I-205 between the Glenn Jackson Bridge near the SR 14 interchange and the I-5/I-205 split and along southbound I-5 between Northeast 179th Street and the I-5/I-205 split.
Additionally, this project also rehabilitated the bridge joints on several bridges along both directions of I-205, to extend the life of the bridges and create a smoother driving surface for all travelers for many years to come.
Several existing concrete panels were broken and cracked, causing an uneven and rough driving surface. If not fixed, it would have caused further erosion and damage, including emergency lane closures. Repairing and replacing damaged and cracked concrete panels extends the useful life of the roadway while providing a level, even driving surface.
Additionally, there are several bridge joints along both directions of I-205 that were not sealed and are crumbling. Contractor crews worked to rehabilitate these bridge joints by removing the concrete slab approaches and repairing and resealing the bridge joints with a rapid cure silicone sealant. Doing this work helped provide a smoother transition between the highway and the bridge approaches.
