What to expect

In September 2024, the 54th Avenue overpass closed for preservation work. The paving area included the overpass and northbound I-5 ramps. In early October, travelers saw single lane and ramp closures while crews applied permanent lane markings.

This project preserved the roadway surface on south side of the 54th Avenue overpass and ramps to and from northbound I-5 in Fife.

Sections of the ramps and 54th Avenue south of I-5 showed signs of wear and tear. This included cracks and ruts. Several emergency pothole repairs occurred in the past year. Improving the highway surface eliminates and helps prevent future potholes. Fresh pavement removes cracking pavement and wheel ruts where water can collect. This gives drivers an improved ride; especially when there is driving rain.

Repaving preserves the highway structure and reduces the potential for costly emergency repairs. This is one of 11 highway preservation projects included in the 2024 supplemental transportation budget passed by the Legislature in early 2024.
