Work completed: Daytime lane closure on US 12 no longer needed following hillside repairs east of Aberdeen

ABERDEEN – Traveling between Montesano and Aberdeen just got a little easier. On May 9, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation wrapped up emergency repairs of the hillside below westbound US 12.

Work began on April 5, when WSDOT’s contractor, Quigg Bros., Inc., started rebuilding the hillside and shoulder near Central Park. Crews occasionally closed the right lane during the project. Now that the project is complete, all lanes are open to travelers.

A slide triggered by heavy rain happened in late December 2022 at milepost 4.6 between Schrader Lane and Holbrook Lane. WSDOT maintenance crews closed the shoulder and monitored the area until permanent repairs could be made.

Travelers can get the latest information on WSDOT projects in the area by signing up for email updates for state highways in Grays Harbor County, downloading the WSDOT app and checking the statewide travel map.

Slow down on ice and snow.

It's easier to skid or lose control traveling at higher speeds. Give yourself more time to stop.

Carry chains, practice installing them.

Winter conditions could mean chains are required on your route. Practice putting them on your vehicle ahead of time.

Pack your winter car kit.

Carry extra supplies like warm clothing, ice scraper and brush, jumper cables and other emergency items.
