US 101 to close north of Quilcene for 22 days starting July 31

Work includes a traffic signal and temporary speed reduction on SR 104 at Center Road

QUILCENE – Travelers heading out along the Hood Canal on US 101 in Jefferson County should take note of a culvert-replacement detour beginning Monday, July 31, and lasting for 22 days.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, July 31, US 101 will close a few miles north of Quilcene from Leland Valley Road to Leland Cut Off Road. The road will remain closed until 7 p.m. Monday, August 21.

Traffic on US 101 will detour onto Center Road. Commercial vehicles will not be able to use this detour because of weight restrictions on the southern end of the detour. They will have to detour between State Route 3 in Shelton and the SR 104 Hood Canal Bridge.

Due to increased traffic at the intersection of Center Road and SR 104, a temporary traffic signaled will be installed. The speed limit also will be reduced at this location from 60 mph to 35 mph on SR 104 between milepost 4.08 and milepost 4.62.

The closure is needed while contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation replace culverts at two tributaries that feed into Leland Creek. The new, larger culverts simulate a more natural creek environment, which will help make it easier for fish to pass through the area during migration.

Travelers are encouraged to sign up for email updates for projects in Clallam and Jefferson counties. Real-time traffic information is available on the WSDOT app and travel center map.

Slow down – lives are on the line.

In 2023, speeding continued to be a top reason for work zone crashes.

Even one life lost is too many.

Fatal work zone crashes doubled in 2023 - Washington had 10 fatal work zone crashes on state roads.

It's in EVERYONE’S best interest.

95% of people hurt in work zones are drivers, their passengers or passing pedestrians, not just our road crews.
