SR 20 roadway and sidewalk improvements in Oak Harbor

OAK HARBOR - Construction began July 9 to repair worn asphalt and improve sidewalks along State Route 20 in Oak Harbor. The work requires weeknight sidewalk and lane closures between Harns and Case roads.

Starting at 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, flaggers will alternate each direction of traffic on SR 20 using a single lane through the work zone until 5 a.m. Travelers should expect delays and consider alternate routes during construction hours.

Sidewalks will close in the work area and safe passage for pedestrians will be maintained through the zone for the duration of the work.

Pavement repairs and sidewalk improvements

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will repair pavement along this 12-mile stretch of SR 20 that has outlived its anticipated lifespan. Through the years, cracks, ruts and potholes have developed, making the roadway uneven, allowing water to pool and reducing tire traction. New pavement will improve driving conditions and extend the life of the highway.

Sidewalk ramps at some intersections also will be updated to meet Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines and improve crossings for all users.

The project is expected to be complete by October 2023.
