Overnight bridge paving to close northbound I-405 in Kirkland Nov. 5; additional nightly lane reductions planned through Nov. 9

KIRKLAND – Four nights of bridge deck repairs will reduce portions of Interstate 405 to a single lane beginning Saturday night, Nov. 5. This includes a full closure of the northbound lanes in Kirkland, with all traffic shifting to the Northeast 85th Street collector/distributor from 11 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, through 7 a.m. Sunday Nov. 6.

This weather-dependent work will repair pavement on three bridge decks damaged by last winter’s weather.

People traveling northbound in the area should expect slowdowns and heavy traffic conditions nightly between Nov. 5, and Wednesday morning, Nov. 9. During the lane reductions, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will repave sections of three bridges. One lane will be available for traffic passing through these work zones, including a detour Saturday, Nov. 5, to the collector/distributor ramp at Northeast 85th Street.

This bridge work on I-405 represents the final portions of the Northwest Region Emergency Pavement Repair project. Following heavy snowfall during December 2021, Gov. Jay Inslee signed an emergency proclamation Jan. 8, 2022, to fund 88 pavement repair projects across King, Snohomish, Skagit and Whatcom counties. The $7 million project is scheduled to wrap up by spring 2023 with permanent striping still to be completed at several locations.

Slow down – lives are on the line.

In 2023, speeding continued to be a top reason for work zone crashes.

Even one life lost is too many.

Fatal work zone crashes doubled in 2023 - Washington had 10 fatal work zone crashes on state roads.

It's in EVERYONE’S best interest.

95% of people hurt in work zones are drivers, their passengers or passing pedestrians, not just our road crews.
