Project overview
The East Wenatchee Corridor Improvement project will enhance safety and mobility along Sunset Highway in East Wenatchee between 9th Street and Hadley Street. This project includes Phases 3 & 4 of the larger “Eastside Corridor Project” to improve north-south mobility through East Wenatchee.
Currently nearly 20,000 vehicles travel along the SR 28 corridor every day. Conflicts between north-south traffic on SR 28 and traffic crossing or turning off/on the highway are increasing. The corridor also has narrow shoulders that are not ideal for pedestrians or bicycles.
This project will widen SR 28 from two lanes to four lanes and construct sidewalks and bike lanes. The project will also install a non-mountable curb median to restrict left turns to reduce collisions and traffic back-ups. Multi-lane roundabouts will be constructed at the intersections of Valley Mall Parkway, 15th Street, 19th Street, and 23rd Street.
The project will also construct a new connection to the Apple Capital Loop Trail at Valley Mall Parkway and will improve the culvert for Sand Canyon Creek near the intersection of 19th Street.
What to expect
A geotechnical team will be doing exploratory drilling on several sections of Sunset Highway between Ninth St. and Hadley St. starting March 31 to May 5. Check the real time travel map for current conditions.
A series of open houses were hosted in November to introduce the project to the public and solicit feedback on proposed improvements. Open house materials and public comment are available by contacting the East Wenatchee Corridor project team.
WSDOT Real Estate Services group was also available at the open house events and continues working with affected landowners to purchase necessary property for fair market value.
Construction will require several levels of traffic control depending on the construction phase, including lane closures and shifts, flagger controlled traffic and delays and detours. Adjacent property owners will be contacted should construction activities close access points or will require a substantial detour.
