US 395 – Hafer Road to Chewelah – Paving & Complete Streets

Project overview

This project will rehabilitate US 395 between Hafer Road and Sand Canyon Road just north of Chewelah, from roughly milepost 202.87 to 207.94 in Stevens County. Crews will be removing the top layer of asphalt and placing new hot mix asphalt (HMA) to create a smoother ride and preserve the roadway for years to come. The project will also incorporate principles of Complete Streets along and across US 395 in the City of Chewelah from South Street to Sand Canyon Road.

What to expect

This project has concluded the pre-design phase and is currently developing documentation of the process undertaken and outcomes for this phase. The pre-design phase identified and developed 30% designs for necessary Complete Streets strategies to implement as part of the paving project. An overview of the selected strategies is available on the “Maps & drawings” tab. The addition of Complete Streets strategies to the paving project aims to improve the active transportation environment along and across the project corridor within the City of Chewelah.

The design phase is currently underway. In addition to finalizing the pavement and Complete Streets designs, this phase will include additional engagement with the City of Chewelah to define the striping of angled parking along Chewelah City Park. This project will be delivered using the Design-Bid-Build process, with construction anticipated to begin in the summer of 2025.
