SR 14 – Lieser Road Bridge – Emergency Bridge Repair

Starting Monday, April 22, the travel lanes across Lieser Road Bridge will be reduced down to a single northbound only lane on the West side of the overpass.

During this traffic configuration, crews will pour concrete to complete the bridge deck and diaphragm replacement and allow it to set during the 14-day cure period.

See Stage 1B in the traffic configuration graphic under the 'Maps & drawings' tab for more information.

Project overview

On July 7, 2022, an oversized load hauling a wind turbine blade was traveling eastbound on SR 14, when it struck and damaged the underside of the Lieser Road overpass, located about 4 miles east of Interstate 5 (I-5), causing significant damage to the structure. The impact exposed rebar and scattered concrete debris along the highway below. Upon inspection of the overpass, bridge crews determined that six out of the seven bridge girders needed repairs and the seventh bridge girder located on the outer eastern side of the overpass, needed to be replaced. As a result, the shoulders were closed due to the severity of the damage.

This project will repair six girders on the southern span and replace one girder on the east end of the southern span over eastbound SR 14. Girders, sometimes referred to as beams, are a main structural component of a bridge that provides vertical support for the bridge deck. Additionally, the guardrail on the southeast corner of the bridge will be replaced to meet current height and safety requirements. Once bridge repairs are completed, travelers will have full use of the overpass, including use of the shoulders for pedestrians and cyclists.

What to expect

During construction, travelers should anticipate the following impacts:

  • Intermittent single lane closures on eastbound SR 14 at Lieser Road overpass during nighttime.
  • Two narrow travel lanes along the overpass will be open or even one northbound travel lane for extended periods, along with intermittent single lane closures.
  • Overnight full closures of eastbound SR 14 for the removal and replacement of damaged bridge girders. Detours via the Exit 4 off- and on-ramps.

The Lieser Road overpass will go through a series of traffic configurations, allowing crews to safely repair the bridge. See the 'Maps & drawings' tab below for a graphic showing the different types of configurations.
