I-5 Marvin Rd to Mounts Rd Planning and Environmental Linkage/NEPA

Project overview

This project began with a federal Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) study focused on Interstate 5 from Marvin Road to Mounts Road. The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental review will start in 2024.

This next phase will study I-5 from Marvin Road to Mounts Road (Exit 111 to Exit 116). The PEL considered additional technical analyses and stakeholder input to arrive at a final purpose and need and preferred alternative(s), to advance into the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental review.

Funding is provided to accelerate work along I-5 through the Nisqually River Delta for preliminary engineering, design and right of way acquisition to address flood risk, improve mobility through the corridor between Mounts and Marvin Roads, and enhance the ecosystem at the I-5 Nisqually Delta crossing. Funding is also provided to construct three roundabouts on SR 507 as the only viable alternative to I-5.

What to expect

The final PEL Report is available. You can also find the report and the appendices under the History and Background tab. You can also find answers to our frequently asked questions, which is also under the History and Background tab.

The planning products produced in this planning process may be adopted during a subsequent environmental review process in accordance with 23 USC 168. We may adopt the Purpose and Need and identified alternative(s), assessed during this PEL process, into the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental review process. Our goal is to not revisit these points once NEPA begins in 2023.

A National Environmental Policy Act review will look at I-5 from Marvin Road to Mounts Road and the area around the Nisqually River.
