Inspection of bridge cables nearing completion

TACOMA – Just in time for Labor Day weekend, Washington State Department of Transportation bridge crews have reopened the westbound State Route 16 HOV lane across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to travelers.

The lane has been closed since Aug. 4 while crews inspected the suspension cables on the south side of the 1950 Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

Today, crews removed the containment platforms next to the westbound HOV lane. In the coming days, crews will finish their work on a section of cables located underneath the bridge deck, away from traffic.

WSDOT would like to thank travelers for their patience while crews performed this important work.

Additional Pierce County maintenance and construction information is available at www.TacomaTraffic.com. Before heading out the door, travelers can find the latest road conditions on the WSDOT app and by following the WSDOT regional Twitter feed.
