The existing ramp terminal and intersection at SR 902 saw traffic volumes that exceed their ability to function properly. The addition of the roundabouts is now accommodating the increased traffic and allowing for the interchange to operate more efficiently. The modifications to the interchange on- and off-ramps have increased the safety of the interchange. The shared-use path now allows people who bike, walk or roll, to move through the area without inconvenience.
This project included:
- A new parallel bridge over I-90 to allow two lanes of traffic in each direction along with the construction of a shared-use path for those who bike, walk, or roll.
- Built three multi-lane roundabouts
- Two were constructed at the east and west on- and off-ramps to I-90.
- A third roundabout was constructed at SR 902 and Geiger Boulevard.
- Modified three of the four ramps to and from I-90.
- Westbound off-ramp was extended to increase safety.
- Eastbound off-ramp created a bus-only lane into the recently opened Spokane Transit Authority (STA) facility.
- The eastbound on-ramp was widened to accommodate an additional lane for future ramp metering.
- For people using bicycles or those walking and rolling (assistive devices, wheelchairs) a shared-use path was constructed to connect to the STA facility. The shared-use path also connected into Spokane County's path along Geiger Boulevard to the north of I-90
Construction began in June 2019 and is expected to be completed in early summer 2021.
