Notes: Due to changes in methodology in 2019 and COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 that resulted in limited data being gathered, five-year, comparable data is not available. Northwest Region includes Island, King, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish and Whatcom counties. North Central Region includes Chelan, Douglas, Grant and Okanogan counties. Olympic Region includes Clallam, Grays Harbor, Jefferson, Kitsap, Mason, Pierce and Thurston counties. Southwest Region includes Clark, Cowlitz, Klickitat, Lewis, Pacific, Skamania and Wahkiakum counties. South Central Region includes Asotin, Benton, Columbia, Franklin, Garfield, Kittitas, Walla Walla and Yakima counties. Eastern Region includes Adams, Ferry, Lincoln, Pen Oreille, Spokane, Stevens and Whitman counties. In 2023, WSDOT included a category for "far past due" to capture a more comprehensive calculation for preservation projects needing attention.

More than 43% of pavement lane miles are due, past-due or far past due for preservation projects statewide in 2023

There were 8,022 miles (43.5%) of the total 18,446 lane miles due, past due, or far past due for a preservation project in 2023. Of the 18,446 total pavement miles, 4,740 (25.7%) were due, 1,704 (9.3%) were past due, and 1,578 (8.6%) were far past due in 2023.

  • Due: A project scheduled for the current year or up to 2 years in the future.
  • Past Due: A project that is more than 2 years overdue but less than 5 years overdue.
  • Far Past Due: A project that is more than 5 years overdue.
  • Future Due: A project that is scheduled for more than 2 years in the future.

In 2022, 7,938 miles (43.1%) of the total 18,420 pavement lane miles on state-owned highways were due or past due for a preservation project. When comparing WSDOT's regions, the statewide total for pavement lane miles on state-owned highways were due or past due for a preservation project in 2023 included:

  • 41.2% (1,591) of the 3,857 pavement lane miles in Northwest Region
  • 65.6% (1,659) of the 2,531 pavement lane miles in North Central Region
  • 36.9% (1,087) of the 2,948 pavement lane miles in Olympic Region
  • 33.7% (796) of the 2,367 pavement lane miles in Southwest Region
  • 46.7% (1,450) of the 3,105 pavement lane miles in South Central Region
  • 39.5% (1,439) of the 3,638 pavement lane miles in Eastern Region

2022

Statewide, 43.1% of pavement lane miles were due or past-due for preservation projects in 2022

Statewide in 2022, 7,938 (43.1%) of the total 18,420 pavement lane miles on state-owned highways were due or past due for a preservation project. This is an 8.5 percentage point decrease from 51.6% of this statewide pavement being due or past due in 2021. When comparing WSDOT's regions, the statewide total for pavement lane miles on state-owned highways were due or past due for a preservation project in 2022 included:

  • 41.2% (1,591) of the 3,857 pavement lane miles in Northwest Region
  • 65.6% (1,659) of the 2,531 pavement lane miles in North Central Region
  • 36.9% (1,087) of the 2,948 pavement lane miles in Olympic Region
  • 33.7% (796) of the 2,367 pavement lane miles in Southwest Region
  • 46.7% (1,450) of the 3,105 pavement lane miles in South Central Region
  • 39.5% (1,439) of the 3,638 pavement lane miles in Eastern Region
