TOUTLE – The majestic view of Mount St. Helens from the Johnston Ridge Observatory will soon  be available to the public again. Now that the seemingly endless winter has given way to warmer temperatures, the Washington State Department of Transportation will reopen the upper portion of the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway (State Route 504) to traffic on Saturday, May 13.

“There’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to reopen the highway each year,” said WSDOT Maintenance Supervisor Clark Sexton. “We plowed a lot of snow, and cleared a lot of debris so the gates can open this week.”

WSDOT coordinates with the U.S. Forest Service to ensure SR 504 is open to drivers headed to Johnston Ridge Observatory in time for the annual May 18 event commemorating Mount St. Helens’ 1980 eruption.

WSDOT closes the upper section of SR 504 every winter near Coldwater Lake (milepost 45) due to hazardous driving conditions. It closed for the winter on Dec. 1, 2016.
