ROCKPORT – Crews are building a unique wall along SR 530 south of Rockport to help shift and direct the Sauk River away from the highway. The wall will be comprised of woody debris, dirt, logs and steel pilings. Work has already started and should be complete by mid October.

WSDOT crews will reduce traffic to one lane just south of Rockport as they clear trees and move heavy equipment. The westbound lane of SR 530 will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Drivers can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

Crews are currently building what’s called a “log crib wall” in the Sauk River near SR 530. This wall is comprised of 112 steel pilings, 15,000 cubic yards of fish-friendly fill material, and 355 logs.

Crews hope to wrap up construction on the wall by Oct. 17.

The river is eroding the bank just west of SR 530 at milepost 59 and threatening to undermine the highway.
