WHATCOM COUNTY – Drivers, residents and travelers interested in joining the conversation about the Guide Meridian (SR 539) widening project in Whatcom County now have a new way to make their voices heard: The WSDOT-sponsored Guide Meridian blog, http://guidemeridian.blogspot.com.

This is WSDOT’s first project-specific blog page. It allows WSDOT to post regular updates and photos of the 10-mile widening project on the Guide Meridian and gives people interested in the work the chance to share their thoughts. With the blog, WSDOT is able to reach out and provide information to people wherever they have access to the internet – at home, at the library or even on a cell phone.

As part of the widening project, WSDOT crews are building four roundabouts, five new bridges, and widening 10 miles of highway on the way to a border crossing. The road is also a key link for travelers heading to the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, B.C.

Recent posts have included information about roundabouts, construction of a new bridge over Wiser Lake and a discussion of why the new Nooksack River bridge will be slightly higher for southbound traffic.

Visitors to the blog can comment on each of the posts and pose questions to WSDOT. The ability for WSDOT to respond to commenters is another way for staff to have informal conversations with people who are interested in the widening project.

Contact information for Guide Meridian project engineer Chris Damitio and WSDOT communicator Bronlea Mishler is listed on the site, and visitors are encouraged to contact them with questions or concerns.
