Program Purpose

The purpose of the Safe Routes to Schools program is to provide children a safe, healthy alternative to riding the bus or being driven to school. Funding from this program is for projects within two-miles of primary and middle schools (K-8) and will be targeted to address all of the following:

• Engineering Improvements
• Education and Encouragement Activities
• Enforcement

Developing a Competitive Plan for Your Project

Funded projects for the Safe Routes to School grant program are chosen based on a competitive grant application process. There are Safe Routes to School Review Criteria to help communities develop a competitive project.
