Washington State Ferries recognizes Tillikum's 60 years in service

SEATTLE – The word Tillikum means “friends and relatives” in Chinook dialect, and on Wednesday, Feb. 27, friends of the ferry Tillikum, including crew, engineers and maintenance workers, unveiled commemorative emblems to recognize the ferry’s 60 years in service.

SEATTLE – After nearly two decades of planning and construction, the State Route 99 tunnel under downtown Seattle is about to open. Foot traffic – not cars, trucks and buses – will be the first to enjoy a two-mile-long journey under downtown Seattle and nostalgic last visit of the old viaduct during the grand opening celebration.

SR 530 - Sauk-Suiattle Confluence - CED Retrofit - Complete Oct. 2019


The river bank along State Route 530 between Darrington and Rockport, parallel to the Sauk River, was classified as an area of chronic environmental deficiency (CED). CED status means the bank required frequent maintenance and repair to maintain the highway, which negatively affected the river’s fish habitat.

SR 99 - Pierce County Line to S 359th St Vicinity - Paving - Complete July 2019


In summer 2019, contractor crews from Tucci & Sons Inc. repaved one mile in both directions of SR 99 between the Pierce County line and South 359th Street in Federal Way.

I-5 - NB SR 104 Vic to 164th St SW I/C - Paving, Expansion Joint, & ADA - Complete November 2019


We repaved about 2.2 miles of northbound I-5 between SR 104 and 212th Street Southwest in Mountlake Terrace. Contractor crews ground off about two inches of asphalt and repaved it with fresh asphalt. The crews also repaved the ramps connecting I-5 with the 164th Street interchange north of Lynnwood.

While WSDOT’s project is complete, Sound Transit continues to work on the Lynnwood Link Extension in this area.

SR 522 - North Creek Bridge to SR 9 Vic - Paving - Complete October 2019


We repaved about 3.5 miles in both directions of SR 522 between North Creek Bridge in Bothell and SR 9 near Woodinville during summer and fall 2019. Crews ground off the old asphalt and replaced it with about two inches of new pavement. They also repaved 22 ramps that connect SR 522 with local roads and other highways, including I-405 and SR 9.

Washington State Ferries releases 2040 Long Range Plan

SEATTLE – More than half of Washington State Ferries’ 23-vessel fleet is scheduled to be retired by 2040. The ferry system needs 16 new vessels in the next 20 years, including 13 ferries to replace vessels due for retirement and three additional vessels to fill in when other ferries are out for maintenance and to respond to growth.
