Design Memorandum

TO:                  All Design Staff

FROM:            Bijan Khaleghi
DATE:             March 26, 2014
SUBJECT:       Deep Foundation Program

This memorandum describes WSDOT policy for use of foundation modeling and design programs. The DFSAP Program should no longer be used for foundation modeling and design of bridges and structures. The p-y type soil response programs such as LPILE (including LPILE SHAFT and LPILE GROUP), are recommended by WSDOT Bridge and Structures Office and the Geotechnical Division for deep foundation modeling and design of bridges and structures.

The BDM Section7.2 “Foundation Modeling for Seismic Loads” has been revised to reflect this policy change (attachment).

Background:

WSDOT has encountered several concerning issues with continuation of using DFSAP Program for deep foundation modeling and design of bridges and structures. As a result DFSAP program is no longer used for deep foundation design and analysis, and is no longer available through WSDOT website. The concerning issues include: lack of usage by the greater bridge community, other DOTs and consultants, compatibility with the software upgrades, lack of agreement with AASHTO LRFD revisions and lack of conformity with WSDOT IT system and maintenance support, etc.

The sunset for DFSAP program for all WSDOT Bridge and structures applications is scheduled for March 31, 2014.
