US 97 - Toppenish to Union Gap - Corridor Improvements

Project news

Why is WSDOT building roundabouts along US 97?

The US 97 corridor has a history of severe and fatal collisions between Toppenish and Union Gap. WSDOT has been working with the Yakama Nation to develop a corridor safety improvement plan. In the fall of 2018, Yakama Nation Tribal Council agreed with WSDOT’s plan to construct two roundabouts on US 97 at McDonald Rd & Becker Rd and US 97 at Jones Rd.

Needs and Benefits

  • Reduce the severity of crashes by lowering vehicle speeds.
  • Provides marked areas for pedestrians to cross.
  • Allows space for freight trucks.
  • Improves traffic flow.

What other safety improvements is WSDOT adding along the US 97 corridor?

WSDOT plans to upgrade existing intersections by making the current stoplights and crosswalks more visible.

  • 2019 - 2020 - Design roundabouts, Community Engagement
  • 2021 - Construction of roundabout at US 97/McDonald Rd & Becker Rd
  • 2022 - Construction of roundabout at US 97 at Jones Rd

Estimated total project cost for both roundabouts is approximately $10 million which includes Federal and State funding.
