SR 6 - Salmon Creek - Fish Passage

Project news

Beginning summer 2019, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation, will begin work to replace the 6 ft. by 8 ft. box culvert that cross under State Route 6 with a new wider, 24 ft. span, four-sided box culvert, just west of Pe Ell, in Lewis County.

Needs & benefits

State highways cross-streams and rivers in thousands of places in Washington State, which can impede fish migration. WSDOT has worked for nearly three decades to improve fish passage and reconnect streams to help keep our waterways healthy. WSDOT Fish Barrier Correction is a priority and replacing culverts with wider concrete bridge spans will improve fish passage, and improve safety to users of the highway.

Replacing the smaller box culvert with a wider box culvert improves drainage and results in a creek crossing that complies with the federal injunction and WDFW water crossing guidelines. Additionally, it improves fish passage and reconnects streams to keep our waterways healthy.

  • Protects Environment: Improving fish passage by opening up the stream creates an additional fish habitat.
  • Improves Safety: Replacing the culverts with wider concrete culverts, lessens erosion around roads by providing better drainage.
  • Reduce Costly Repairs: Replacing the culverts with a wider concrete culvert will reduce the cost of emergency maintenance repairs.

What can travelers expect during construction?

During construction, traffic will shift to the south side of the road, onto a temporary single-lane, bypass road. This detour allows travelers to safely bypass construction around-the-clock, and will be controlled with an automated signal. Travelers should expect delays of up to 20 minutes, for additional intermittent, daytime single-lane closures, as needed. Most of this work will occur during the summer and fall.

  • Spring 2019: Project goes to ad
  • Summer 2019: Construction scheduled to begin
  • Fall 2020: Construction scheduled for completion

The estimated cost of this project is $1.65 mil
