Cornerstone Christian Academy opened to students in fall 2018 on the northwest corner of SR 503 (NE 117th Avenue) and NE 107th Street.
The school was initially using a temporary portable classroom for as many as 700 students, which significantly increased the number of vehicles using this intersection, especially during student drop-off and pickup times.
In accordance with Clark County’s development agreement with Cornerstone Christian Academy and the property owner, the developer constructed a center turn lane at the intersection of SR 503 and NE 107th Street and extended median curbing on SR 503, from just south of the Central Transfer and Recycling Station to the existing median curbing just south of the Clark County Saddle Club.
This section of SR 503 is already a busy traffic corridor with more than 30,000 vehicles daily. With the expected increase in traffic volumes as a result of this development, installing a center turn lane and extending median curbing through the project area was necessary to address these traffic impacts and improve safety for all drivers through the corridor.
The center turn lane allows drivers on SR 503 northbound to turn left onto NE 107th Street. All other access on and off of SR 503 through this corridor is restricted to right turns only.
Drivers from the neighborhood along the west side of SR 503 will continue using NE 107th Street to turn right onto SR 503 southbound toward Orchards. However, drivers no longer turn left from NE 107th Street onto SR 503 northbound toward Battle Ground. Drivers will use an alternate route, such as driving south and turning left onto NE 99th Street, followed by another left onto SR 503 northbound.
Construction started between late July and early August 2018 and was completed before the start of the 2018-2019 school year, in accordance with Clark County’s development agreement with Cornerstone Christian Academy and the property owner. This agreement also required the school to install a traffic signal at the SR 503-NE 107th Street intersection within 24 months.
This is a privately funded project that was not financed by WSDOT or Clark County. The estimated cost of installing the median curbing and center turn lane was approximately $177,000.
