Needs & benefits

Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard (State Route 500) near Northeast 182nd is located in east Clark County, just outside the city of Vancouver. The intersection is located along a curve of the roadway which can make it difficult for travelers to see vehicles stopped ahead wanting to turn left off of the highway. Increased growth and development have resulted in increased travel through the area. Currently, about 10,000 vehicles use this stretch of highway daily. Crash data over a five-year timeframe between 2013 to 2017 showed most of the crashes occurring at this intersection were at-angle. We are beginning work to design a roundabout to help improve safety and travel efficiency at the intersection.

Why a roundabout?
A roundabout at this location offers the greatest safety benefit by reducing the potential for severe collisions, while keeping connectivity and improving travel efficiency through the intersection.

Roundabout Benefits
Studies have shown that roundabouts are safer than traditional stop sign or signal-controlled intersections. The Federal Highway Administration determined that roundabouts can increase traffic capacity by 30 percent to 50 percent compared to traditional intersections. Want to learn more? Roundabout videos are available on YouTube.
