Needs & benefits

The State Route 20 corridor provides the primary access to Whidbey Island and local Skagit County Fidalgo Island communities, serving over 19,000 vehicles and 1,000 trucks a day. Located about a mile south of recent corridor improvements at Sharpes Corner and Gibralter Road, the intersection of SR 20 and Campbell Lake Road, has seen a 20 percent increase in traffic over the past five years.

The Samish Indian Nation was able to obtain planning funds and is partnering with WSDOT and Skagit County to develop a practical solution to improve safety and access. If additional funding is secured, these improvements could take place as early as summer 2022.

Improvements at this intersection will create added mobility and safety, improving the local and regional transportation networks.

Timeline

This project is still in the initial planning phase.

Funding

This project is being sponsored by the Samish Indian Nation. The estimated cost for intersection improvements is $3.2 million.
