Crews will open a new eastbound State Route 520 on-ramp at 5 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, and simultaneously close the existing on-ramp from the Washington Park Arboretum. The Arboretum on-ramp, originally opened in the 1960s, is vulnerable to earthquakes and leads to an old section of the highway slated for removal.
Washington state is earthquake country. As part of an ongoing effort to minimize damage when a quake strikes, crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will begin a new construction project to help protect Interstate 5 in Olympia.
