WSDOT anticipates bridge will open to traffic in fall 2019

BUCKLEY – A temporary bridge on State Route 162 across Spiketon Creek in Buckley will open to travelers by fall 2019. The original, 82-year-old bridge was permanently closed to travelers in August after Washington State Department of Transportation survey crews discovered a bridge pier had settled over four inches. The settlement compromised the bridge’s structural integrity.

“We heard from the community, including schools, first responders, local residents, drivers and elected officials, just how important this connection is to local traffic,” said WSDOT Olympic Region Administrator John Wynands. “The temporary bridge allows us to hold our original bridge replacement schedule while restoring the crossing.”

The Spiketon Creek bridge is scheduled for replacement in 2023.

The temporary bridge will be installed over the top of the original span. WSDOT will design and build new foundations that will raise the height of the crossing. Since the temporary bridge will be supported by the new foundations, it won’t place additional strain on the compromised structure.

Work on the new foundations is expected to begin in spring 2019.

Real-time traffic information is available on the WSDOT app and on the Olympic Region Weekly Construction and Traffic Updates web page.
