Construction and maintenance

Construction and maintenance of Washington State Ferries' terminals and vessels are vital in maintaining safe service.

Ferry construction projects

Washington State Ferries has current and future construction projects at the Seattle, Mukilteo, Clinton, Bainbridge and Fauntleroy terminals, as well as new vessel builds.

Ferry system electrification

WSF is developing a system-wide electrification plan that expands on the 2040 Long Range Plan to evaluate alternatives and propose an efficient strategy for using hybrid electric vessels throughout the system. The plan will be delivered to the legislature in September 2020.

Washington State Ferries’ contracts out roughly $3 million in terminal maintenance construction each year. These contracts address short-term issues identified through facility inspections prior to larger replacement projects. WSF also conducts a large portion of maintenance work with in-house staff and by working with various WSDOT regions.
