Building, maintaining, and using our transportation infrastructure affects the air quality, noise, and energy use in our communities. In addition, transportation is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in our state. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) considers the impacts our projects and programs have on these resources, from noise and air emissions from construction equipment to the traveling public's use of our roadways.
WSDOT builds noise walls to reduce the level of noise from roads when specific criteria are met. Find more information on the noise barrier process and how to reduce traffic noise at your residence on our road noise and noise walls page.
