Project overview
In June 2026, WSDOT built a compact roundabout at the intersection of State Route 546/East Badger Road and Benson Road. The new roundabout will help improve safety along the busy SR 546 corridor on the northern edge of Lynden.
What to expect
Primary construction is finished, but crews will return in July after the new asphalt has cured to install permanent lane markings.
There could be up to four daytime single-lane closures of SR 546 with alternating traffic. Benson Road will be closed north or south of SR 546 during these daytime closures, depending on which direction of SR 546 is closed. Dates for these lane closures will be announced when they are scheduled.

Nearly 11,000 vehicles per day traveled SR 546 in 2025 between SR 539/Guide Meridian and Depot Road. To help improve safety along the corridor, WSDOT previously built roundabouts east of Benson Road on SR 546 at Depot Road, Bender Road and Northwood Road.
The SR 546-Benson Road design will be a compact roundabout. The center of the roundabout is designed so semi-trucks, farm equipment and other large vehicles can easily drive over the curb to safely navigate the roundabout.
Improving safety
Studies have shown that roundabouts are safer than traditional stop sign- or traffic signal-controlled intersections, reducing injury crashes by 75% and overall collisions by 37%. They do this by:
- Lowering travel speeds near the intersection.
- Promoting continuous traffic movement so there is no light to beat.
- Reducing the potential for serious “T-bone” and head-on collisions with one-way traffic within the roundabout.
