Eastbound and westbound SR 534 will alternate between I-5 and SR 9 from 7 p.m. Friday Aug. 7 to 5 a.m. Saturday Aug. 8 to complete paving work.
Project overview
Beginning July 15, contractor crews working for WSDOT will repave a 4.5-mile stretch of State Route 534 in Skagit County. Crews will grind out the existing pavement and lay a fresh layer of asphalt, creating a smoother ride for people who use SR 534 and extending the life of the highway. They’ll also install fresh pavement markings. The paving section will stretch from the Interstate 5 interchange with SR 534 to about a half mile west of the SR 534/SR 9 intersection.
What to expect
Most of work will be done at night using pilot vehicles and flaggers to alternate traffic through a single lane between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. nightly Sundays through Friday mornings. People traveling through the area should expect delays while crews are working.
There also will be periodic nighttime closures of the I-5 on- and off-ramps at SR 534 while the project is working in that area. Detours will be available, looping around at adjacent interchanges.
Paving work is expected to finish in July, provided the weather cooperates, and crews will return in August to install permanent lane markings.
WSDOT will repave a 4.5-mile section of SR 534 between the Conway and Lake McMurray communities.
Most of SR 534 included within the project limits was last paved in 2003, and the pavement is due for rehabilitation. WSDOT’s traffic data shows that in 2024 the average number of vehicles traveling daily on SR 534 ranged from 4,664 east of the I-5 ramps to 1,309 west of the SR 9 intersection.
A future project will rehabilitate pavement along the final half mile of SR 534 west of the SR 9 intersection and use a Complete Streets lens during design phases. The future project will design a transportation corridor to help make SR 534 in the Lake McMurray community more accessible, comfortable, economical, sustainable and efficient in the travel space provided for all forms of transportation, including walking, biking and using transit.
