SR 513 - Montlake Bridge - Mechanical Rehab, Deck Replacement & Joint Repair - Complete May 2022

Project overview

In 2021, contractor crews working for WSDOT replaced the more than 20-year-old worn grid deck on the Montlake Bridge. They also made expansion joint and mechanical repairs so the movable span can continue to operate reliably and meet the growing multimodal traffic demands of northeast Seattle. In spring 2022, crews returned to do one final weekend of paving work on each end of the bridge, completing this project.

Needs and benefits

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, an average 40,000 to 66,000 drivers used the State Route 513 Montlake Bridge in Seattle every day. Seattle’s population has grown by more than 140,000 people in the past 10 years, and projections show no signs of it slowing down in the decade ahead. This preservation project keepsthe bridge in a state of good repair as it continues to support the needs of a growing population.

What travelers need to know

WSDOT appreciates everyone's efforts to make last year's deck replacement a success. Following this spring's paving of each end of the bridge, this project is considered complete and no additional closures related to this project are planned.
