SR 508 – 0.3 Miles East of Bergen Rd – Engineered Log Jam

Project overview

In July 2026, contractor crews will return to finish work to protect the SR 508 embankment from erosion caused by the Tilton River, between mileposts 28.8 and 28.92 in Lewis County. Contractors will install two engineered log jams upstream to help reduce erosion and flooding, lower the risk of the river changing course, and improve habitat for fish and wildlife.

What to expect

Work began Monday, July 6, 2026. During construction, travelers on SR 508 near Bergen Road (mileposts 28.8 to 28.92) will take turns using one lane through the work zone, controlled by a temporary traffic signal.

At times, flaggers will direct traffic through the work zone. Travelers should expect delays of up to 20 minutes when flaggers are present.

Please slow down, follow flaggers' directions and be patient through the work zone.

In summer 2026 contractor crews will work to install two engineered log jams alongside SR 508 within the Tilton River. This creates a natural habitat for wildlife and helps protect the embankment from further erosion.

In February 2022, heavy rain caused the Tilton River to rise and began eroding the SR 508 embankment. To stop further damage and protect the highway, contractors placed large rock and woody material along the riverbank to stabilize the slope and help create fish and wildlife habitat.

Crews then added topsoil and planted native vegetation to help hold the soil in place.

The final phase of the project will install two engineered log jams (ELJs) just upstream of the repair area. These structures will further protect the highway from erosion, help reduce flood impacts, and support both existing and newly created habitat.
