Project overview
The existing traffic signal at the Bethel/Bay/Maple intersection reached the end of its useful life. Following research and analysis, WSDOT replaced the existing traffic signal with a modern single-lane roundabout.
What to expect
Starting Monday, April 29, crews will resume work at the intersection of Bethel Avenue (State Route 166) and Bay Street in Port Orchard.
From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each weekday, travelers can expect one-way alternating traffic. People are encouraged to add more time to help prevent delays.
What to expect
Several work activities are required before installation of the final layer of asphalt. Depending on the weather, this phase of construction could take two weeks.
If the weather cooperates, crews will return in several weeks to install final lane markings and perform any remaining work to complete the project.
A detour will continue for people walking through the area. Trucks also will continue to detour around the intersection.
Why couldn't this work be done last winter?
Warmer weather and mostly dry weather are required for paving. Both help create a long-lasting product. Asphalt producers typically are closed during the winter months. WSDOT thanks travelers for their patience as we work to complete this project.
