I-5/SB East Edgar St to East Gwinn Place Noise Wall - Complete March 2025

Project overview

This project built a noise wall along southbound Interstate 5 from East Edgar Street to Franklin Avenue East. Contractor crews working for WSDOT constructed the new noise wall to abate noise from the I-5 express lanes just south of the Ship Canal Bridge between Lake Union and Portage Bay. The wall was finished in March 2025.

What to expect

Work on this project is substantially complete.

Noise wall improvements will be made along Boylston Avenue East and southbound I-5 from East Edgar Street to Franklin Avenue East.

This area of I-5 was constructed in 1962. Some homes stand within 100 feet of the busiest highway in the state. Constructing a new noise wall helps abate noise to the nearby neighborhoods, especially during peak travel hours when the express lanes experience more traffic and at times when we need to keep the express lanes open overnight.
