I-5 / Portland Avenue to Port of Tacoma Road – Southbound HOV

Contract summary

This project proposes to construct HOV lanes to provide I-5 HOV connectivity in Pierce County north of SR16 and to construct a new crossing for southbound I-5 over the Puyallup River. Project improvements include, but are not limited to, the following:

Reconstructing sections of I-5 to provide space for HOV lanes. Reconstructing southbound I-5 between Portland Avenue and Port of Tacoma Road. Demolition of the existing bridges over the Puyallup River for southbound I-5 (Bridge No. 5/456W) and northbound I-5 (Bridge No. 5/456E), and construction of a new crossing over the Puyallup River for southbound I-5 general-purpose traffic.

Demolition of the existing bridge (Bridge No. 5/451) and construction of a new crossing over I-5 for L Street. Constructing retaining walls in various locations.

Removal and replacement of Portland Cement Concrete Pavement on I-5 in both directions between McKinley Street and Portland Avenue, and in the southbound direction of I-5 from Portland Avenue to Bay Street. Providing new HMA on I-5 in the southbound direction from Bay Street to Wapato Creek and on select ramps.

Providing traffic elements such as signing, illumination, and Intelligent Transportation Systems. Completion of the stormwater facilities that were partially constructed in the I-5 / Portland Avenue to Port of Tacoma Road – NB HOV project. Open HOV lanes in both directions of I-5 between Delin Street and 54th Avenue.
