The safety of bridge structures in Washington state is ensured through a meticulous inspection system. All public bridge owners, such as Washington State Department of Transportation, counties and cities, follow the same bridge inspection procedures. The condition rating of all bridge decks, superstructures and substructures and other elements based on these inspections.
USDOT’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requires all public bridge owners (state, city, and county ) to inspect and their bridges and report information including bridge condition ratings as part of their requirements in the National Bridge Inventory Standards (NBIS).
WSDOT regularly inspects bridges and categorizes them by condition. Bridges classified in "Poor" condition are monitored, repaired or replaced. These bridges are prioritized for future work as part of WSDOT's Bridge Preservation Program. A "Poor" rating is the FHA’s new rating term for bridges previously described as "structurally deficient."
A bridge in "Poor" condition does not mean the bridge is unsafe for travelers or in danger of collapse. Bridge inspectors have authority to close or restrict any bridge deemed unsafe at any point during an inspection.
The actual number of bridges in "Poor" condition varies as work is completed and bridges are inspected. Depending on inspection schedule timing, a bridge with completed work may remain on the list until the next inspection is completed. The list is updated twice a year, in January and July.
