Practical Solutions

Practical Solutions guides how we manage the organization and everything we invest in it. It applies to all we do as an efficient 21st century organization, including the way we administer, manage, plan, program, design, construct, operate and maintain each of our services and programs.
WSDOT is working to create a Practical Solutions Performance Framework that will help WSDOT make the right investments, in the right place, at the right time.

Several states have implemented variations on the practical design theme, sometimes with a different name, but all have a similar purpose – to make the best use of limited resources:

The “Practical Solutions Approach to Project Development” training program summarizes WSDOT’s planning and project development process and explains the Practical Solutions approach. It includes:

WSDOT's Practical Solutions Policies recognize that communities have different transportation needs than rural areas. Within communities, residents and visitors alike have expectations that the built environment accommodate all modes of travel safely and efficiently.
Transportation planning establishes a performance framework for transportation decision making and management of system assets. Planning also coordinates with other transportation providers to identify performance gaps and works with communities and partners to prioritize needs and assesses strategies to address the needs.
With practical design, decision-making focuses on maximum benefit to the system, rather than maximum benefit to the project.
