SR 503 - 3 Miles West of SR 503 Spur - Slope Stabilization - Updates

Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 10, contractor crews will temporarily close the highway near Speelyai Bay Road for rock blasting work.

Closure schedule

  • Tuesday, Oct. 10, noon until 4 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 11, from noon – 2 p.m.
  • Thursday, Oct. 12, from noon until 2 pm.

Aug. 18, 2017 UPDATE: Beginning Monday, Aug. 21, flaggers will move traffic through SR 503 near Speelyai Bay Road during work hours, Mondays through Saturdays, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for safety during rock scaling and anchoring work. Outside of work hours traffic will continue to alternate through one lane of highway until the project is complete later this year.

May 8, 2017 UPDATE: A single lane of the highway reopened to traffic on Monday, May 8. Drivers on both directions of SR 503 near Speelyai Bay Road will alternate through a single-lane, around–the-clock, for slope stabilization work. The speed limit though the area is reduced to 25 mph.

April 12, 2017 UPDATE: SR 503 remains closed near Speelyai Bay Road . Contractors will begin the first phase of rock blasting work to remove a dangerous rock slab above the highway on Thursday, April 13. Once debris is removed, the area will be inspected to determine next steps. Additional work will likely include blasting and slope stabilization work. March 17, 2017 UPDATE: Both directions of State Route 503, 20 miles east of Woodland remain closed due to a major debris slide blocking the highway. Due to heavy rainfall, the slope continues to move and there is concern of additional rocks and debris falling. Using drone technology, WSDOT geotechnical engineers inspected the hillside and are working to develop a permanent repair. At this time, it is still too soon to tell when the highway will reopen to traffic. Drivers should continue to use alternate routes. Watch drone video of the slide.
